What are the Benefits of a Steam Shower?
You know this one…there’s nothing like a good, hot shower at the end of a long day. You are tired, achy or just want to chase away the winter blahs. We all crave the spa-like environment a well-designed shower can add to the experience. But you used to only get that at the spa. Now, there is an add-on to the shower that can give you that indulgence at home.
As a professional interior designer in Bergen County, clients who desire a better shower tell me their first choice is for an oversized rain showerhead. Their second wish is for a steam shower. They want to understand how it works and the benefits they will receive before they undertake this installation. This is what I tell them:
#1. What are the parts of the steam shower?
It’s pretty straight-forward. A steam head connected to a steam generator is the source of the steam. It uses about a gallon of water that is heated like a plug-in kettle. A pipe channels the hot vapor to the disperser. The best place to install it is 6 to 12 inches off the floor so the steam can rise and spread through the shower area. The size of the unit depends on the size of the shower.
The controls for the steam and other accessories are installed 5 feet from the floor. Maximum installation height is 7 feet but these are usually accessed by using a remote control.
The steam generator has to be installed a specific distance from the shower. It is a unit that can go into a vanity or into a nearby closet. It can even go in the attic if the attic is heated. It must be accessible for maintenance.
Obviously, if you want a steam shower, you have to plan for it. You need to select and install the correct shower tiles. A plumber and electrician are necessary to hook everything up. The shower enclosure is a bit different than a regular shower too.
#2. Are there accessories to add to the basic steam?
Yes. You can add an aroma therapy dispenser, chroma therapy lighting, Bluetooth, fog free mirrors and a nice bench to sit and relax on.
#3. What are the benefits of installing a steam shower?
These are the reasons for investing in this unit and all it entails.
