3 Ways to Incorporate Your Most Treasured Items
Clients are sometimes fearful that I will discard everything and start from scratch. As a professional Interior Designer in Bergen County, NJ, here’s what I tell them:
Mementos and special collections represent important moments in your life. Showcasing those items of sentimental value adds character to a room that is being redone and tells a story.
#1. Display
With respect, collections and objects that have significance need to be curated carefully to avoid a look of clutter. Each piece has a story and shows the timeline of your life. Every piece you own doesn’t have to be out. The best of the bunch is a good rule of thumb when deciding what to display.
#2. Placement Options.
Be open to where things can be shown. Just because you had some things in the living room, doesn’t mean you can’t shift them to a different room. Sometimes a collection of items can come together in a space you might never expect it.
In this photo, larger scaled crystal forms which are very delicate are located behind glass and in a custom mirrored niche. They can be admired, but yet are safe. Who would have thought a powder room would be where they would be displayed?
#3. Architectural Details.
You can change the environment around the existing furniture that you’d like to re-use by adding architectural details to a once plain box room. It gives the room an entirely different feel.
With a change of fabric on the upholstery, a sofa that was barely used in the living room can have a whole new life!
